Underperformance: A People Issue or a Clarity Issue?

    16 February 2026

When performance slips, it’s easy to label it a “people problem.”

    • They’re disengaged.

    • They’re not trying hard enough.

    • They’re not the right fit.

Sometimes that’s true, but often, underperformance is a clarity issue in disguise.

    • Were expectations explicit?

    • Was “good” clearly defined?

    • Was feedback given early?

    • Was support available?

People struggle when the target keeps moving, or was never visible to begin with.

If someone doesn’t know exactly what success looks like, they guess, and guessing rarely produces consistency. That doesn’t remove accountability, it strengthens it.

Because once expectations are clear, conversations become simpler:

    “This is the standard.”
    “This is where you are.”
    “Here’s what needs to shift.”

You can still ask what’s getting in the way, you can still offer support, but you’re working from shared clarity, not assumption.

When underperformance lingers, it’s often because no one defined the gap clearly enough to close it. Strong systems make expectations visible and they document conversations. They create development pathways.

That doesn’t guarantee perfection, but it removes ambiguity and ambiguity is usually where performance problems begin.
