People DevelopmentWhy Development Plans Shouldn’t Be Filed Away After Appraisal
Development plans often begin with good intention.
A thoughtful conversation.
Ambitions discussed.
Skills identified.
And then…the document disappears…..until next year. When development only lives inside the appraisal meeting, it becomes theoretical. Growth needs visibility.
What are we building?
What does progress look like?
When are we reviewing it?
Without follow-up, development turns into aspiration, with structure, it becomes movement. Development shouldn’t be separate from performance, it should support it.
If someone needs to improve presentation skills, where is that tracked?
If someone wants progression, what capability gap needs closing?
If training is agreed, who ensures it happens?
When development is linked to regular 1:1s, learning pathways and clear role expectations, it stays alive, it stops being a form, it becomes direction.
Employees stay engaged when they can see progress, leaders feel confident when development conversations are documented and revisited.
Filing plans away isn’t neutral, it quietly signals that growth isn’t a priority. Keeping them visible signals the opposite, and visibility changes behaviour.
