Why Spreadsheets Are Not a People Strategy

    16 February 2026

Spreadsheets are useful. They track absence. They log holidays. They record performance notes. But they’re not a strategy.

Spreadsheets hold information. They don’t create clarity.

When people data lives across multiple files and inboxes, it becomes fragmented. One version updated. Another forgotten. Notes stored privately instead of centrally. Nothing feels broken. Until you need the full picture.

    1. What’s this employee’s absence pattern?

    2. What was agreed in the last 1:1?

    3. What development was promised?

If the answer requires searching three folders and someone’s memory, that’s not visibility. That’s vulnerability.

    A people strategy connects information.

    • Performance links to development.

    • Absence links to wellbeing conversations.

    • Goals link to business priorities.

Spreadsheets can’t do that. They store fragments. And fragments create inconsistency.

When information is central, structured and visible, leadership becomes steadier. Decisions are based on history, not recollection. Conversations feel supported, not improvised.

This isn’t about technology for the sake of it. It’s about reducing friction. Spreadsheets are tools. But tools don’t replace systems. And systems are what make people strategy sustainable.
